just to throw my 0.02? in...

I am using "64Studio" http://64studio.com
Which basically is a debian/testing combined with a kernel with current
realtime/low latency patch and a custom repository especially geared at
music making / production. The repo is active maintained so that (almost)
everything works out of the box, as the typical musican is not very inclined
to dig deep into the manpages. Mainly, it is for x86_64, but there is a
32bit version as well.

After adding the debian repos and some "debian-multimedia" mirror (Marillat
repo)
and setting up the correct Apt-PIN, it was not difficult to get cinelerra to
compile. So bottom line is: with "64studio" you get easy to setup system
(similar
to ubuntu) and at the same time you get a up-to-date debian.
