I've seen this too, and it was inconsistent. To me, it looked like
maybe it was related to the problems Rafafel has been investigating.

Vasanth, try this:

1. Restart Chrome
2. Navigate to any webpage (eg www.google.com)
3. Drag the crx onto the page

It's important in step 2 that the current page not be one of Chrome's
built-in pages like the new tab page or history page.
