OK - so my test was with the master branch of ceph-deploy which does work correctly - specifically:
https://github.com/ceph/ceph-deploy/commit/b796a45b119afb9186301a868c25a9ba70642891 https://github.com/ceph/ceph-deploy/commit/374088665e43654e97512ab40f2cc141e238f21c are post .31 so only the basic check is in the current released version. I'll request that a new release is made - in the meantime I'll pick both of those commits into the Xenial ceph-deploy package.
