The error is from qemu-kvm.

You need to check whether your qemu-kvm supports all the arguments listed above for option "-drive". As you mentioned, the qemu-kvm is built by youself. It's likely that you missed something or the qemu-kvm version is old, and doesn't support some of the
arguments.

Just a note that switching from qcow2 format to raw format got us past
the invalid argument error but now we are stuck on a "Geom Error"
i.e. I can start the VM but it doesn't see enough of the disk
geometry to even find the boot sector, even though I can
verify that the boot sector is in fact there in the vm that's mounted
via rbd.
