They are similar projects but with slightly different targets. I guess with Ceph+Openstack and Gluster+[RHEV|Ovirt] as natural partners. That said I'd love to see Ceph+[RHEV|Ovirt]. That would really be the way I'd like to run my virtualisation setup (too small really for private cloud).
One really good thing that RH can bring to both projects is better documentation and top-notch support.
