I recently performed an update from the exact mentioned version 17.2.3 to .5 
using cephadm.

Like you, I was extremely concerned that something could go wrong since I have 
very little knowledge of what happens in the background.

However, there were no problems :) I worried for nothing.

Nevertheless, you should make sure to have backups of the most important data.

I love ceph but also have a huge fear that something might not work and about 
1.5PB of data (raw) might disappear...
