Just for kicks, can you try: - installing FreeBSD 7.1 64bit - installing a FreeBSD8 snapshot from recently - Windows 2003 server - OpenSolaris - Ubuntu (server) ? If none of these work, I'd toss it ;-) There may be a reason why they were cheap...
