Great, thanks for the info.  Just in case anyone else is
interested, here's how it worked for me:

# mkdir -p /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
# rpm -Uvh 
http://mirror.nic.uoregon.edu/centos/5/os/SRPMS/openldap-2.3.27-8.el5_1.3.src.rpm
# fgrep enable /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/openldap.spec
...
