FYI I've had little time lately but I'm continuing to pursue this issue. I've created a small test program that got ld to crash in a different way, and solved that yesterday. Unfortunately, that fix (it's in SVN) didn't solve the original program. I'll try to get at this with a better test program :-) If anyone has any, please don't hesitate to send it.
