Linux is the only system it doesn't come with and it can be installed
on most systems as libmd or libbsd (this one is deprecated). It's not
a very painful band-aid to rip off.

Well, of the 9 systems I build tested this on, only freebsd12 and
freebsd13 completed successfully. Ubuntus, RHEL 8, netbsd and openbsd
all failed.
The ubuntus I think need libmd-dev. No idea about the others and I
don't have time at the moment to find out. So, in principle I'm not
opposed to this patch, I just don't have time currently to go hunting
for the right combination of things to pass build on my systems.
Perhaps next weekend I'll have the time to spend. Ot, if you could at
least tell me what going to be needed on these (non-ubuntu/debian)
systems, that would save me some time.

I made a second attempt at this and made the configure script detect

LOC that we no longer have to maintain is a small gain, there is
already a huge amount of code to maintain, if someone else is
working on an exact copy and distributing it as a library it only
makes sense to use theirs.
But are you willing to go through the wikis for each OS and update
them with the names of the proper packages that need to be installed?
