I just wanted to let everyone know about some of the changes I made to
the wiki over the past couple of days in preparation for the next release.
Feel free to debate, point and laugh, etc :)
There were tons of minor changes and fixups, but the main points were:
- I removed cases where a "build page" mentioned starting the "script"
command or some such in order to record the compile. I think this is
superfluous, and anyone doing a build of CDE should know how to record
the output of a command. Personally, I use:
time make World 2>&1 |tee mk.log
I don't think it's necessary to tell users how to do something they
should already know how to do :)
- I also removed header sections that were enumerated (2.0, 2.1.3),
etc), and used the plain header tags instead "#, ##, ###, etc). This is
a personal choice I admit, but I find such numbered lists annoying to
maintain, unless they can be automatically numbered/renumbered as
needed. SF doesn't do that, so... nope.
- I added [TOC] (Table of Contents) tags to a couple of pages that are
long and have many header/sections ( See
https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/LinuxBuild/ for an example).
I think this a good way to see an overview of the steps required and a
quick way to jump to them. We may want to add them to a couple more
pages, particularly on the other build pages.
- For the build pages, I provided BOTH the git clone method, and the
"Hit the big green button" methods for obtaining the source. We should
try to be as consistent as possible on these pages.
Since I've learned more about this wiki software, I could place just
that segment into a special "include_downloading" page and all of the
build page would just include it. The ultimate in consistency and
re-usability :)
I may give that a try later.
- On pages that referenced remote images, I downloaded those images, and
then uploaded them as an attachment to the wiki page. Then referenced
the image in the wiki via the normal way.
I think we should never rely on assets located on remote servers, and
that we have no control over.
There are 3 pages where the original images linked to were no longer
available (deleted dropbox locations) - these are the ones only Chris
can fix because he's the one who created them in the first place. See
the "Wiki cleanups" thread for details :)
So please, in the future, no more remote images and other files link in
the wiki. Since you can add files as page attachments, there should
never be any reason to do that.
- I added links on the
https://sourceforge.net/p/cdesktopenv/wiki/CustomisingCDE/ page to all
of the other "tips and tricks" pages scattered about. I think that when
a new page in this vein is added, we should link to it on this page.
People should not have to select the "Browse Pages" button to find
things on the wiki :)
Other than that, I just tried to be consistent (and no doubt failed in a
couple of instances). Feel free to fix!
Enjoy!
