At most institutions, including research-supportive undergraduate
institutions, you will be expected to maintain an actively publishing
research program capable of attracting external funding. If you choose to
take summer vacations instead of pursuing publishable research, you will
likely find yourself terminated at your junior faculty review or at tenure
review.

9 month faculty contracts are de rigueuer as they allow you to supplement
your normal salary by up to two additional months through external research
grant funding (in the US). Most faculty are paid their 9 month salary over
12 months.
