PhD student in Single Molecule Biophysics / Structural & Molecular Biology

The Rudolf Virchow Center / Research Center for Integrative and Translational Bioimaging of the University of Würzburg has a vacancy for a                                                                          PHD STUDENT IN THE FIELD OF SINGLE MOLECULE AND STRUCTURAL STUDIES OF DNA REPAIR AND TRANSCRIPTION REGULATION

Applications are invited for an exciting PhD opportunity at the interface between single molecule biophysics, structural as well as cellular studies. The project addresses tumour-associated interactions between DNA repair processes and gene transcription.

Our laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms of different DNA repair protein systems using single molecule approaches. We use atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging and single molecule fluorescence microscopy coupled optical tweezers, as well as a range of biochemical and biophysical functional assays, to obtain synergistic information on diverse mechanisms of DNA repair systems. In addition, we are interested in the intriguing interplay between DNA repair proteins and DNA replication on the one hand, and gene transcription on the other hand. The PhD project will exploit a combination of single molecule, crystallographic, and cellular approaches for the characterisation of protein interactions in DNA repair and transcription regulation.

The Rudolf Virchow Center and the University of Würzburg offer state of the art infrastructure and provide a highly motivating scientific environment. Successful PhD applicants will have the opportunity to enroll in an international graduate program at the Graduate School of Life Sciences (GSLS) in Würzburg. The University also provides various support, for example with moving to Würzburg through the International Office and the Welcome Centre.

To apply, you should hold a Master degree in biophysics, biochemistry, or a related field and be enthusiastic about mechanistic aspects of protein systems in DNA processing. Ideally, you have a background in single molecule biophysics and/or structural biology. The positions are available immediately and come with a competitive salary based on Public Service of German Federal States TV-L (E13).

Please send applications (including cover letter, CV, copies of certificates, and contact information for two referees) as a single pdf file (no more than 10 MB) to ingrid.tess...@virchow.uni-wuerzburg.de until 1 JUNE 2023. The University of Würzburg is an equal opportunity employer.
