Wow, 0.8 and 0.9 are quite different (the patch for that is 526k lines).
For a fresh install, atoms *are* labelled by default as you move from
one residue to the next. It seems that you have some how turned that off.
set_label_on_recentre_flag(1)
Use Calculate -> Scripting -> Python or put it in a preferences startup
script, say xenops.py
