I'm asking for this community's assistance in getting women and other
underrepresented groups an equitable presence at the 2020 Gordon
Conference for Diffraction Methods in Structural Biology. I have always
found this an extremely valuable and productive meeting for experts and
novices alike, and the mixture is key to success. I think I've done ok
with speaker invitations, but I want attendees to have a healthy cross
section too. Please self-identify in your application. My goal is to
raise enough funds to pay the way of all female and other ethnically and
geographically diverse applicants. I don't want "I can't afford it" to
be the reason promising young minds miss out on this experience. After
all, my theme is about what diffraction methods could do with a trillion
dollars.

Please note that not just anyone can go to a GRC. Prospective attendees
must apply and their application reviewed on the basis of what they can
contribute to the discussion. Discourse is the central mission of GRC
meetings, and nothing engenders new ideas quite like bringing together a
wide range of viewpoints and getting everyone talking freely and openly.
I want bright young scientists to sit and chat with the legends and
icons, despite the barriers that may exist if they happen to be female,
underfunded, and/or live far away from Maine.
I hope to remove these barriers financially. I wish I could simply
announce that all female and other underrepresented applicants can come
to the GRC for free (registration, food, lodging, travel), but right now
I only have enough funds to cover nine more attendees. However, if I can
get 1000 people to donate $100 each my goal will be in reach. Even a $1
donation counts. Contributions can be made here:
https://ww2.grc.org/contributions/contribution.aspx?ID=11657
100% of each donation goes directly to supporting applicants, and they
are tax deductible in the US. Christine and I are making our own
private contribution, as have others. Will you be one of them?
