We invite applications for two PhD positions in structural cell biology based partly or entirely at the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology, University of Leeds: - *The structure and function of retinal photoreceptor connecting cilium proteins (**Closing date: 7th January 2019)* Defects in these proteins are associated with inherited disorders characterized by blindness and/or kidney failure. This project will investigate the structure and function of these proteins by X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and super-resolution imaging approaches. This is a BBSRC White Rose DTP project supervised jointly between the Cockburn, Johnson and Ranson labs at the University of Leeds; please see https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/structural-and-functional-studies-on-proteins-required-for-vision/?p59606 for more details. - *The molecular pathogenesis of KIF5A mutations (**Closing date: 21st January 2019)* The microtubule motor KIF5A is involved in long-range axonal transport. KIF5A mutations cause inherited spastic paraplegias. This project will investigate the effects of pathogenic mutations on the structure and function of KIF5A.
