Two PhD student positions in Structural Biology on Membrane Proteins and Structural Biology of Biomembranes available at KTH Royal Institute of Technology
We are looking for motivated persons to fill the following two PhD student positions: ************ PhD position 1: Structural Biology on Membrane Proteins: ************ Doctoral studies on the function and structure of enzymes that are target proteins for development of new strategies for treatment of plant infections. The project involves studies on integral membrane proteins that synthesize flavonoids, glycolipids and polysaccharides that play a role in plant pathogen virulence and pathogenicity. Relevant work tasks include, but are not limited to, molecular cloning of genes relevant to the project, heterologous gene expression, protein purification, protein crystallization (and when needed preparation of samples for cryo-electron microscopy experiments), determination of protein structure by means of high-resolution structure-determination techniques (protein X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy), biochemical characterization of the enzymes’ catalytic activity, functional studies in model membranes, and rational enzyme design. The PhD student will be affiliated to the KTH School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology, and Health (CBH) (https://www.kth.se/en/cbh/skolan-for-kemi-bioteknologi-och-halsa-1.763561) with placement at Albanova University Centre (https://www.albanova.se). Eligibility and selection To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § The Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility: • passed a degree at advanced level, • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal-oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following will be assessed: • ability to independently pursue your work, • ability to collaborate with others, • have a professional approach and • analyze and work with complex issues. It is an advantage if you hold a Master degree (MSc) in Biochemistry or equivalent competence with relevance for the research field. Previous practical experience (research project studies or similar) of techniques in molecular biology, protein purification, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, work with membrane proteins, and enzymology are considered meritorious. Excellent skills in written and spoken English are a requirement. A suitable candidate should be highly motivated for conducting scientific research, fundamental and applied; have well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, be able to work independently, and to manage and drive a research project. The candidate should have good ability to interact and communicate with other people within and outside the research group. In addition to the eligibility criteria and the additional meriting qualifications, considerable weight will be put on personal qualities and suitability. The objective is to expand the knowledge of how lipid and protein composition of biomembranes affect their molecular structure and function, which is of critical importance to understand biological processes such as cell signaling and membrane transport, but also a range of diseases associated with these processes. Relevant work tasks include, but are not limited to: methods in molecular biology and biochemistry for production and characterization of membrane proteins; biophysical methods for studies of biomembranes, such as nano-infrared (IR) microscopy; and development of techniques to prepare samples of natural, biological membranes for nano-IR studies.
