if you are happy with NIS and NFS version 3, the setup is very simple. For NFS you pick one of the computers as server and list the directories (e.g. /home and /xtal) in /etc/exports (syntax examples are usually within that file). The syntax for mounting might actually be the same as on IRIX. For NIS you install the package nis on all machines and define the server as server and all other machines as clients. It helps to define the server by IP-address in /etc/ypclient.conf on the client machines. If you want NFS version 4 with kerberos protection and / or and LDAP-system instead of NIS, you should really be interested in these technologies and refer to one of the howto's available on the net. But I would not recommend it since you only want to work with a small network.
