Dear colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to an upcoming free, educational webinar to be presented by Elspeth Garman, Ph. D. titled "Radiation Damage in Macromolecular Crystallography: What is it and why do we care?" Radiation damage inflicted during diffraction data collection in macromolecular crystallography has re-emerged in the last decade as a major experimental and computational challenge. Even for crystals held at 100 K such damage can result in severe data quality degradation and the appearance of artifacts in solved structures which affect biological interpretations. In this webinar, the observable symptoms and basic physical processes involved in radiation damage will be described and the concept of absorbed dose as the basic metric against which to monitor the experimentally observed changes will be outlined. Investigations into radiation damage in macromolecular crystallography are ongoing and the number of studies is rapidly increasing. Our understanding is improving and various possible counter measures will be summarized.
This webinar is scheduled to occur on Thursday, October 4th at 10:00 AM CDT (8:00 AM PDT / 4:00 PM GMT). You can find more information, including a registration link at: http://www.rigaku.com/webinars. This page also includes links to recordings of past Rigaku webinars. Best regards, Angela Criswell NOTE: This webinar is part of a free webinar series designed to provide educational and training materials in X-ray crystallography methods. Each webinar will address a new topic ranging from optimization of crystallization conditions to solving the phase problem. You can find links to recordings and slides from past webinars at http://www.rigaku.com/webinars. We also invite anyone to submit topic suggestions for future webinars and hope that you'll provide feedback for our previous webinars. -- Angela R. Criswell, Ph. D.
