Citric acid will chelate magnesium - this may not disrupt the
crystallization of the protein, but it could result in a non-physiological
active site.  The coordination geometry of Mg2+ is hard to miss, so it's
usually obvious whether it's there or not despite being the same number of
electrons as water, but if you don't see a nice hexahedral arrangement, the
citrate took it all.
