Dear All, We have a fully funded position open for postdoctoral researchers to study the mechanism and regulation of mobile DNA with Structural Biology (crystallography) and Biochemistry. The successful applicant will join the Barabas group at the Structural and Computational Biology Unit, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. EMBL is a leading international research organization with a collaborative and interdisciplinary atmosphere (see www.embl.de). The Barabas group studies the mechanism of movement and regulation of DNA transposons using molecular and structural biology (http://www.embl.de/research/units/scb/barabas/index.html).
Transposons are mobile genetic elements that have shaped evolution for millions of years by creating genetic variation. They can also carry exogenous genetic information (eg. antibiotic resistance or therapeutic genes) and offer attractive genetic tools for transgenesis, functional genomics, chromosome engineering and even gene therapy. We investigate how transposons move at molecular and cellular levels; and how they are controlled by host factors and small RNA pathways to avoid genetic instability of the cell. In addition, we are also interested in exploring and exploiting the potential of transposon based genetic tools. We are seeking a skilled and passionate biochemist or structural biologist who is enthusiastic to venture into this area of research. He/she will join a young and energetic research group in the resourceful environment of EMBL, surrounded by world-class scientists from a wide variety of fields. Projects will involve a combination of structural biology (mainly X-ray crystallography), biochemistry, molecular and cell biology. The successful candidate will be encouraged to pursue these projects independently, but well integrated into a highly collaborative team of researchers. He/she will be offered expert training in either of the required experimental techniques; as well as practice in training students and career mentoring through institutional and personal means. Qualifications and experience: Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in structural biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, chemistry, biophysics or in a closely related area. Research experience in structural biology, biochemistry, molecular or cell biology is desired. Good knowledge of standard cloning techniques, protein expression and purification is required. Experience with insect and/or mammalian cell cultures is a plus. The ability to work independently as well as in a team, good communication skills and excellent knowledge of English are also essential. Contract: 2 years Closing date: December 4th, 2010 Commencing date: As soon as possible after closing date To apply please go to: http://www.embl.de/aboutus/jobs/searchjobs/index.php?newlang=1&newms=sr&searchregion=641 Applicants should submit a covering letter describing their motivation, interest in the position, and longer term goals and research interests (briefly); a scientific CV including a list of publications; and the names and contact information of 3 referees. Please, contact me via e-mail if you have any further questions.
