A crystallization experiment could be automated, with a small mass. If I understood the intent properly, it sounded as if he was considering running the diffraction experiment in space also. That would significantly increase the mass, and might vault the project beyond the available level of automation.
Although I guess if it was fully automated so that no personnel had to be involved post-launch, shielding would no longer be a concern.
