Post-doctoral position in structural enzymology

A post-doctoral position will be available starting July 1, 2010 in the group of Dr. Nicholas R. Silvaggi at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Our lab uses X-ray crystallography, steady-state enzyme kinetics, and complimentary biochemical and biophysical techniques, to probe the structure and function of antibiotic biosynthetic enzymes. Antibiotic resistance is a serious and persistent problem that requires the continual development of new, effective antibiotics. The ultimate goal of our research is to apply lessons learned from natural product biosynthetic strategies to the enzymatic or chemoenzymatic synthesis of new antibiotics.

The laboratory is located in newly-renovated space in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, which supports 23 enthusiastic faculty members and 75 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. The department is connected to the Milwaukee Institute of Drug Discovery, whose focus includes the development of new therapies for microbial and parasitic diseases with an emphasis on multi-drug resistant infections. More information about the department and laboratory can be found at: http://alchemy.chem.uwm.edu and http://alchemy.chem.uwm.edu/research/silvaggi. We have access to a state-of-the-art Rigaku home source and dedicated beamtime at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) through the LS-CAT.

The successful candidate will have received their doctoral degree in biochemistry or biophysics by July 2010, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and perform well in a collaborative environment. Previous experience with recombinant DNA techniques, protein expression, and purification is required. Previous structural biology experience is an advantage, but is not necessary. To apply, please submit a cover letter including a brief description of research experience, scientific interests, and training goals, a C.V. with a list of publications, and contact information (e-mail address and phone number) for three references to: silva...@uwm.edu. Informal inquiries are welcome at the same address. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
