If you look at the structure of glycerol and how it binds to your protein, what other compounds are similar yet probably won't bind? You essentially are trying to unoptimize substrate binding which is probably easier than optimizing substrate binding. It seems to me that possibilities are anything with 2 to 5 carbons and 1 to N -OH groups might do the trick. Annie H has mentioned 1,2-propanediol. This reminds of my organic chemistry exams which always had the following question: "Show how to synthesize the following compounds from alcohols of 4-carbons or less ...." Good luck! Jim
_____ ... I was wondering if anyone might know of something else that I could use in place of glycerol in my protein solution?? Regards, Serah University of Cape Town
