Is there a minimum or maximum value.

There are those who suggest negative intensities require a good imagination when obtaining their amplitudes. You might have to profile-fit the most overloaded spots, like what mosflm does. I assume this does the same thing, but I try not to use it.


Also if there is a variation then what all does  it depend on.

In general, throwing away any data without a truly compelling reason is not sound.

You might want to give imosflm a try. scala and pointless are now integrated into the gui, it is blazingly fast, and it seems to always "do the right thing" in terms of choosing defaults. Best of all, it is free.
