Several post-doctoral positions in the area of structural biology are available in the laboratory of Dr. Mirek Cygler and funded by CIHR. The research activities of the group focus on structural and functional characterization of proteins to gain detailed understanding of their mode of action. The ongoing projects include: (1) structural and functional characterization of bacterial protein complexes, (2) structural studies of enzymes involved in synthesis and modification of glycosaminoglycans; (3) structures of bacterial membrane proteins. The candidates should have some experience in either protein crystallography, good background in biochemistry and experience in protein purification. There is very good technical support in molecular biology, protein purification and all computational aspects. Our laboratory is very well equipped for all aspects of structural work. In addition to in-house area detectors we have very good access to the synchrotron beamlines. Several liquid handling robots are utilized for cloning, protein purification and crystallization. Our computing facilities include a network of graphics workstations, servers and PCs, as well as a large Linux cluster. The group includes several macromolecular crystallographers, NMR spectroscopists, technicians and a computer specialist. The laboratory provides a challenging environment, which promotes collaborative work within the laboratory and outside. Montreal is vibrant, multicultural city, with many cultural, social and recreational activities. Excellent restaurants with variety of ethnic foods, charm of the Old Montreal, famous summer jazz festival, good cross-country and downhill skiing in the winter within 45 min from the city and excellent biking paths in the summer. Good hiking in Adirondacks is only 2 hrs away. If you are interested please contact me at the address below.
