W3-Professor for Structural Biology - Head of the Helmholtz Department
of Structural Biology and a Junior (W1) Professorship

Dear Colleagues,
we are writing to inform you about exciting new job opportunities in a
newly established, independent structural biology laboratory. We would
appreciate if you could spread the information about these positions
among those in your field whom you think might be interested besides
yourself.

The German Helmholtz Association, together with the University of
Hamburg, is creating a new department of Structural Biology at the
German Electron Synchotron (DESY) in Hamburg and invite applications for
a professorship in Structural Biology (Head of the Helmholtz Department
of Structural Biology) plus a Junior Professorship.

The Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest research agency,
encompassing 15 research centres and an annual budget of around 2.3
billion Euro. DESY, the German Electron Synchrotron in Hamburg, is a
member of the Helmholtz Association. In 2009 DESY will re-dedicate the
storage ring PETRA III, providing one of the most brilliant x-ray
sources worldwide. Three of four x-ray beamlines, assigned to biological
research, will be available for protein crystallography. The x-ray free
electron laser X-FEL, scheduled to begin operation in 2013, will
additionally allow unprecedented real-time research into biological
processes at the atomic scale.

This professorship offers a unique opportunity for state-of-the-art
research with generous funding for personnel, investments and running
costs. The head of the new department will be able to make their own
impact on this field and to create novel approaches to questions related
to health research. The group of the junior professor will be integrated
into the department.

For a full specification of these appointments, please see the
advertisements at http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/science/jobs/42039
and http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/science/jobs/42040.
The closing date for applications is March, 6th 2008, so we hope this
will receive your immediate attention.

Please do not hesitate to contact us in case of further questions. We
will be glad to provide any further information that you may need.

Yours sincerely,

Dirk Heinz
