The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble, France and financed by 18 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science, and physics. Research at the ESRF is carried out by several thousand external users each year from universities, public research laboratories and industry, and by the ESRF's own scientists. The ESRF employs about 600 staff and is organized as a French société civile. The working language of the ESRF is English.
Within the Directorate, the Industrial and Commercial Unit (ICU) is responsible for the sale of experimental time(beamtime) and associated services, marketing, technology transfer and scientific collaboration contracts, including contracts within the context of FP6. The Experiments Division designs, constructs and runs the ESRF experimental stations (= beamlines). For the ICU and the Experiments Division we are now recruiting a

a 3-year contract
THE FUNCTION:
A number of industrial activities (http://www.esrf.fr/Industry) are carried out on the ESRF Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) experimental end-stations (beamlines). For the support aspect, you will be expected to liaise with external industrial users of the beamlines, collect and process data within the framework of the MXpress service ( http://www.esrf.fr/Industry/Applications/MX/MXpress). The remaining time you will be involved in the development and promotion of industrial activities at the ESRF and in the supplying of support for academic users at the MX beamlines. You will also participate in the development of a new remote access service to be made available to both academic and industrial users of the MX end-stations and (when appropriate) in other activities carried out by the MX group.
Since these activities are the joint responsibility of the Industrial and Commercial Unit and the Experiments Division at the ESRF, you will report to the Head of the Industrial and Commercial Unit for aspects related to the commercial activity and to the Director of Research for scientific and technical aspects.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
This contract is for a fixed period of 3 years and should start as soon as possible. You should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline and must have extensive experience in the application of X-ray crystallographic methods, including the collection, processing and analysis of diffraction data, to the structure determination of biological macromolecules. Interest in developing the industrial aspects of applications of macromolecular crystallography at the ESRF is considered a very valuable asset.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The ESRF shares a site with several other major European scientific institutes, it offers an exciting opportunity in an international atmosphere. Installation allowances will be given to new staff coming from outside the Grenoble area, and an expatriation allowance can be given according to specific internal regulations.
