Hi Everyone, Another multicast question: Why do I frequently get different numbers of responses to the same ping command from different points in a multicast network? For example, the following is taken from multiple routers in a simple, converged multicast environment:
R1(config)#do ping 224.1.1.1 Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 1, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 224.1.1.1, timeout is 2 seconds: Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 8 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 16 ms !---------------------- R3(config)#do ping 224.1.1.1 Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 1, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 224.1.1.1, timeout is 2 seconds: Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 12 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 16 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 16 ms !------------------------ R2(config)#do ping 224.1.1.1 Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 1, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 224.1.1.1, timeout is 2 seconds: Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 8 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 20 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.24.4, 20 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 12 ms !------------------------ R5#ping 224.1.1.1 Type escape sequence to abort. Sending 1, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 224.1.1.1, timeout is 2 seconds: Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 20 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 120 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 112 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 108 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 104 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 96 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 92 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 88 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 84 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 84 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 72 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 72 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 64 ms Reply to request 0 from 10.1.45.4, 60 ms I thought perhaps there was some difference between running the command right from exec mode as opposed to config mode, but some testing showed inconclusive results there. Any insight into why this is so inconsistent? Does it suggest a multicast routing loop?
