If using Auto RP and IP PIM Sparse-Mode then then the AutoRP listner is required otherwise the routers will not be listening to the 224.0.0.40 multicast address to learn the RP. This command allows the routers to join the multicast group in order to learn the RP. If using Pim sparse-dense mode then the routers can learn of the RP through dense mode so the autorp listner command is not needed.
