As you suspected, European Redwing is very rare anywhere in North America and especially so this time of year. 

But anything is possible. There have been other highly unlikely species found at other times and places. So it is always a good idea to follow up on reports like this to be sure that we are not missing a mega rarity in our backyard so to speak.
