Speaking of Halloween owls, last night after I finished a hockey practice at Lynah Rink, some teammates and I were all standing in the parking lot chatting. Suddenly a large bird came winging towards the rink, and as it got closer I could see it was a Great Horned Owl. It kept moving and jokes were made about it needing to deliver some letters. ๐
This reminded me that my very first Great Horned Owl sighting was also on a college campus, in Alabama many years ago, but around this time of year. Whether it is your first time or twentieth time, itโs always thrilling to see one! Been out on Johnson Road (Town of Phelps) the last few nights in the hopes of seeing the short-eared owls that commonly winter here. Tonight, at about 6:30 I was looking at my phone and about to head home when I was suddenly startled by a very sharp "bark" very nearby. I looked up to see 2 short-eared owls cross the road very near my car and then head into the field on the east side of the road! Just in time for Halloween!!
