The Cayuga Bird Club will be meeting on Monday, February 9, at 7:30pm at the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with cookies and conversation at 7:15.
Our speaker, Dr. Andre Dhondt, Morgens Professor of Ornithology at the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology, will be presenting - "Factors driving rapid changes
in virulence of the bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum in house
finches (Haemorhous mexicanus)". Interactions between emerging pathogens and
their hosts can cause changes in both host and pathogen. A novel strain of the
bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), a widespread, economically important
poultry pathogen, emerged in 1994 in eastern N. America, primarily in
introduced wild house finches. MG causes severe conjunctivitis and reduced
survival in the wild. In 2002 MG spread to the western (native) range of the
house finch. MG virulence, as measured by severity and duration of eye lesions,
is rapidly increasing both in eastern and western house finches. Dr. Dhondt
will report on experiments that test the hypothesis that an increase in
virulence is the result of competition between MG strains in a system in which
hosts can recover from infections, but maintain imperfect immunity after
recovery (the immune escape hypothesis).
Members are invited to dinner with Andre and his wife Keila before the
meeting at 5:30 pm at Taste of Thai Express. Please RSVP by noon Monday to
[email protected] so reservations can be made.

Hope to see you Monday!
