In discussing with my son, Chris, I must have seen a HERMIT THRUSH,
rather than the Gray-Cheek that I reported yesterday. I only had a
short profile look. It appeared a drab brown with what I thought was an
incomplete eye-ring. What really threw me off is that I could not make
out any reddish color to the tail. But again, I only had a side view.
I've since learned from Matt Medler's average first arrival date
spreadsheet that Gray Cheeks should not be here for another couple
weeks. Based on hindsight I should have suspected Hermit when it landed
in the yard for a couple seconds, during which time it cocked its tail
up like a Hermit would do.
