This morning, for the first time in 29 days, an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL is
roosting in view in our nest box in northeast Ithaca. It's been about nine
years since we've seen an owl here so late in April, but this bird has a
long way yet to break our late-spring screech-owl record date of May 21,
2005.

Also, on Tuesday evening, I saw a MERLIN aerially sprinting on a southerly
tailwind above the Northeast Elementary School playing field. This species
is always a nice surprise in our suburban neighborhood, but is also starting
to seem like a regular April visitor (three of the last four years).
