Hi all,

I went for a walk on east Ithaca Recreation way. I came across one Cedar tree
with lots of fruits. The result of lots of fruits translated into lots of
birds. I watched multiple individuals of several species of birds feeding on
the fruits. Interestingly they returned to same locations to feed again and
again. Robin used a perch which was one of the top open branches. So did
yellow-rumped warblers used two or three of the exposed branched. Cedar
waxwings, chickadees, Goldfinches and House Finches used the perches that were
interior or at middle level of the tree on exposed to the road.

Nearby there were lots of White-throated Sparrows and Song Sparrows, which fed
on the ground below the tree. I did not see if they fed on the dropped cedar
fruits as the other birds dropped lots of fruits. I don't know if they were
purposely dropped or that happened to be by chance. At least one fruit dropped
by an Yellow-rumped warbler seemed on purpose.

I am tempted to check the nutritional quality of the dropped fruits versus on
the tree. I might stop by tomorrow morning and check it out!

But overall it was fun watching them feed on the fruits as different birds used
different techniques to pluck and eat the fruits. I will post the video at
some point.

Cheers

Meena
