Hello Cayugabirders, Some of you may already be aware of this, but my dad, Guy Baldassarre, passed away from leukemia just over a year ago. Guy was a professor of ornithology at SUNY ESF in Syracuse specializing in waterfowl ecology and management. At the time of his death he was just finishing up a massive revision of the go-to waterfowl species account book "Ducks, Geese, and Swans of North America" that is due out early next year. Guy spent countless hours up in the Montezuma wetland complex. His ornithology field trips there were the stuff of legends among the ESF undergrads. There's a very good chance that, even if you don't know Guys personally, you bumped into him if you've been birding Montezuma over the last 25 years. He was the friendly guy with the afro and the Boston Red Sox cap on.
Friends of Montezuma, in partnership with the NYS DEC, Ducks Unlimited, SUNY ESF, and many other contributors is planning a marsh restoration project in Guy's name. They will be restoring a 87 acre abandoned muck farm into a healthy wetland. The site is located in Savannah, at the corner of Van Dyne Spoor Rd. and Savannah Spring Lake Rd. It will be named "Guy's Marsh", and promises to be a great spot for birders (there have been black terns scouting out the area over the last few years), complete with a boardwalk and observation tower.
