Hi all,

As I opened my eyes today morning, I saw a catbird at one of my bedroom windows
hovering like hummingbird/flycatcher. I think it was trying to follow a moth
which my eyes could not focus. But it was visible for a 3 or 4 seconds. Moths
catbirds ignore are - Green pug moth, yellow-fringed Dolichomia, Clover
Hayworm, Snowy Urola, most Veneer moths, Virginian Tiger moth and many smaller
Totricids. Moths that get nabbed are Banded Tussock moth, Hickory Tussock moths
and many noctuids. It would be interesting to know why they ignore some of the
moths. I wish I had a pet catbird to test some hypothesis, whether it is visual
cues or chemical cues that are playing part in ignoring moths. I will have to
wait and watch natural behavior!

It is fun to learn more about catbirds!

Cheers

 Meena
