LeConte's is a great bird. I managed to get one in 2004 in Texas with Bob Doe
and others. I'd rank him up there with a Henslow's as among one of my favorite
(and hard to find) sparrows.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Le Conte's Sparrow photos
Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2012 16:01:41 +0000

I didn’t get anything really good, but I have put the best of the LE CONTE’S
SPARROW photos I took this morning at the bottom of
http://picasaweb.google.com/KevinJ.McGowan/Fall2012Birds.

First found by Tom Schulenberg on Saturday, the bird was rediscovered by Jay
this morning at the same location: Freese Rd, Ithaca, Tompkins Co., along the
pond north of
Liddell Lab, on the west side of the road.

Although none of the photos are great, they should confirm the identification
with the most important characteristics:
Bright, light buffy face, the same in the supercilium as in the lores, malar
region and onto the upper chest.
Thin dark streaks across the buffy upper breast. Belly unmarked white.
Center of crown pale, bordered by blackish stripes on either side.

Black line extending from the back of the eye over the top of the light gray
auriculars, expanding into triangular dark patch.
Heavy streaking on the flanks.

The crown stripe eliminates Nelson’s Sparrow, and the dark flank stripes rule
out Grasshopper. The bright buff face with light gray auriculars eliminates
Henslow’s Sparrow,
 as well as Savannah Sparrow.
