Having received an RBA text message from Jay McGowan, and having gotten a gentle inquiry from Ann Mitchell (who has been ahead of me by one species in the David Cup) as to whether I had seen the bird yet, and having heard that she, Perri McGowan, Gary Kohlenberg, Stuart Krasnoff, and Jeff Gerbracht had seen the bird, and having gotten a bit of a description of where it was and how cool it was, I decided to have a look. Fortunately for me, as I arrived Tom Schulenberg (and someone I don't know, sorry) was leaving and gave detailed directions to me and Bob McGuire who arrived just after me. Bob and I followed a couple other people almost to the woods to view the bird against the sunset in the farthest clover field opposite the SPCA. The other fellow was a photographer. We got great looks at a curvy, speckly brown, stripy-crowned curlew. When we were sated, we headed to the road where we found Jill Vaughn. Well I just had to make the big sacrifice, go back, and make sure she saw a life bird. While we were there, a neighborhood couple walked by along the woods edge. They also enjoyed a view through my scope, and the gentleman said he'd first noticed the bird on Sunday. The sun had set and light was starting to get dim as we left around 8pm. The Whimbrel was still walking about and munching on grasshoppers or the like, seemingly healthy and happy, and surely fattening up for the next leg of its migration to the coast.

He last saw it around 4 pm today (Wed) in the fields across from the Tompkins County SPCA at 1640 Hanshaw Rd. in Ithaca. He said it’s been there all week. Here is his description (he was using binoculars):~14” tall with blue-grey legs, downwardly curved bill which was orange at the base, striped head (longitudinal – parallel to the neck, not crosswise), white eyebrow and a mottled back. He’s not sure it’s a Whimbrel but would love a confirmation. It would be a life bird for him! Please post to the list and copy Jacob if you confirm (or not). [email protected]Thanks!
