I received a report that today (19 June 2011) a helicopter flew very low over the Bald Eagle nest at Mud Lock at the north end of Cayuga Lake, driving the two young birds from it in flight. The witness said the move by the helicopter appeared deliberately directed at the nest. Only one of the youngsters returned about 20 minutes later, appearing tired The other youngster, which may not have flown before, did not return during the time the witness was there. The helicopter was yellow with darker trim, which the witness described as being similar to helicopters used by New York State. I assume that even though Bald Eagles have been removed from the Endangered Species list, they and their active nests are still supposed to be protected from such harassment, and I am hoping that someone on this listserv can pass this information on to the appropriate authorities. I hope that the helicopter can be identified and its pilot prosecuted.
