Doug Beattie of Bethany NY and I had a perfect weather day (temperatures in the
low teens, howlingwinds and drifting snow) for winter birds 2/8/11. On Rose
Hill Road, Town of Fremont, Steuben County we saw a flock of 6 Horned Larks and
6 Snow Buntings. At another spot on Rose Hill Road we saw 16 Snow Buntings and
14 Horned Larks. At 7052 Smith Rd, Town of Howard, Steuben County we noted 5
yard feeders and saw 15-20 Common Redpolls, about 10 American Tree Sparrows, a
few each of Dark-eyed Juncos, House Finches, American Goldfinches, Black-capped
Chickadees, House Sparrows , and 1 Blue Jay,and 1 Downy Woodpecker. On Palmer
Rd, Town of Howard, Steuben County we saw 12 Horned Larks. On Pre-Emption
Road, Town of Barrington, Yates County we saw 20 Snow Buntings. At the
intersection of I- 86/ I- 390 we saw 3 Canada Geese flying high overhead
heading north. We saw a high flying fast moving hawk momentarily but were not
able to identify it. It was the only hawk we saw for the entire day.We saw
mostly large flocks of crows at manure spreads but smaller flocks also and some
isolated crows. There were some Starlings and Pigeons about. We saw a single
Robin. What a refreshing day. Jerry LazarczykGrand Island NY
