Hello all,

If anyone wants to help with next Wednesday's (Dec 29th) New
Woodstock-Southern Highlands CBC
please email me at above email--this count is largely in SW Madison
County--not too far away. I could
sill use a party or two.

With 3 count weeks birds we recorded 73 species on the Dec 18th Cortland
CBC-- for the last 10 years
this is about average to a little above average.

The misses were: RN Pheasant, Snow Goose, Lapland Longspur, N. Harrier,
and Scaup, Ring-necked or
even Common Loon. The Pheasant is the biggest miss.

The highlights for Cortland CBC were:

WOOD DUCK 2 (Factory Brook)

Redheads: 3 (south end of Skan. Lake)

AMERICAN COOT : 1 (south end of Skan. Lake)

GOLDEN EAGLE (seen in Sempronoius by Tim Lenz and Chris Wood)

Bald Eagle (seen in Homer by Bobbie Monroe and party; first time we've had
both eagles on the day of the count)

NORTHERN GOSHAWK: 2 (1 adult Atwood Rd south of Lake Como seen by Jim Barry
and Chad Devoe,
and Judy Read; and 1 near south end of Skan. Lake)

MERLIN : cw

American Kestrel : 3

Rough-legged Hawk: 10

GB Heron: 4

SAW-WHET OWL: 2

LONG-EARED OWL: 1

Barred Owl: 3

Great-horned Owl: 3

Eastern-screech Owl: 5

RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET (Lake Como seen well by Judy Read)

YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (Groton Cemetery Scanlon, Kelling and Rosenberg):

N. Flickers 4

Belted Kingfisher: 3;

NORTHERN SHRIKE: 3 (scattered)

COMMON RAVEN: 17 (high count)

CAROLINA WREN (our house in Scott; only one on count)

NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD: 3 (city of Cortland)

Eastern Bluebirds 20+

American Robins 25+

SWAMP SPARROW (Mclean seen by Peter Harrity's party)

RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD : 1 (Homer)

Brown-headed Cowbird: 32

EVENING GROSBEAK: 27 (24 at feeders at Hovel Chalet on corner of Salt and
Fillmore; 2 others at Eaton Rd and 1 other via Lenz and Wood Sempronius);

COMMON REDPOLL: 4 (2 at Lake Como and 2 others reported by Bobbi Monroe
Homer )

PINE SISKIN: 14 scattered about

Purple Finch: 9

RED CROSSBILL: cw (count week)

Lastly, it seems like one of the best years in a while for Tree Sparrow.
Several flocks of 20+ can be
found in weedy fields. We might have set a count high for this species.

cheers, Happy Holidays, and a big thanks to everyone that helped,
Matt
