The Freese Road gardens were replete with exciting birds on Sunday morning.
Highlights include:

* ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in the goldenrod northeast of the gardens, between the
research enclosure and the ravine. I plainly saw this bird's black eye-line,
white eye-arcs and supercilium, muted gray-green upperparts, and a yellower
underside. Stuart Krasnoff also saw yellow undertail coverts.

* Two PALM WARBLERS first seen perching, then flying east across the road, over
the plots, and into the trees at the eastern edge.

* Many sparrows, including LINCOLN'S (around the patch of tall corn south of
the parking area), SWAMP (6+), SONG (25+), FIELD (5+), CHIPPING, WHITE-CROWNED
(6+), WHITE-THROATED (12+) and EASTERN TOWHEE. Somehow I missed seeing any
Savannah Sparrows.

* RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET under the trees and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET in the trees
by the ravine.

* An adult SHARP-SHINNED HAWK making a dramatic but ultimately fruitless aerial
attack, scattering dozens of terrified goldfinches, then alighting for a while
on one of the posts of the research enclosure.

* COMMON RAVEN calling from the ravine.

PS. This morning I finally found out about the results of this year's
Muckrace. Jeff Gerbracht, Kevin McGowan, Gerard Phillips, and Chris
Tessaglia-Hymes had the day's top species tally, of 147. Bob Spahn captained a
team from the Rochester area that finished second, followed by a team that
included Meena Haribal, Sue Adair, and Tony Shrimpton. People collectively
found a record 191 species, including 26 shorebird species and 24 warbler
species. Congratulations to the winners and to all participants! Many thanks
to the organizers!
