Apologies for the delay. This afternoon (7 May) about 1:30pm while I was
driving
south on NYS 13/34/96 I saw a BLACK VULTURE with 2 TURKEY VULTURES, all
circling over the intersection where 13 splits/joins with 34/96. I pulled over
first
on the road shoulder for awkward binocular views through the windshield, then
at
the closed road to the Robert Treman SP camping, and with much effort managed
to get the bird in my scope (compact cars are not designed for raptor
scoping!).
It was backlit and I could get no color on it, but the broader wings, more
substantial
neck, and much shorter tail fanned wider with sharper corners, along with
flatter
wings all led to my ID. It headed south over Inlet Valley and disappeared
behind
trees on the near hillside. I drove up 13, down Decker, and refound it by
Decker &
34/96 (more awkward scoping) as it returned from the east side of the valley,
then
glided north. After much fussing I managed to get a text to the rare bird
alert, but
I apologize for not notifying the list. On my return trip with a passenger I
re-found
the bird at 2:09pm. It was over the east side of Inlet Valley near Lick Brook
and
heading north with considerable flapping. Over South Meadow Street later on
that
same trip I saw a BALD EAGLE glide southeast overhead, but I don't know its age
as I was reluctant to use binoculars in moving traffic with a customer in the
car.
