I still haven't heard from at least 3 parties. The big misses in case anyone is out birding are Purple Finch, Northern Mockingbird, Northern Goshawk, Belted Kingfisher, Merlin (although the parties I haven't heard from covered Suggett Park where they've nested), Lapland Longspur (often found on this count), and Swamp Sparrow. If anyone has seen these birds please let me know!!!! Despite it not being a winter finch year, the count was a success with many really great finds! At the top of the list are the 6 SANDHILL CRANES (a count first) Julie and I saw about 2 miles from the south end of Skaneateles Lake. Also, the SAVANNAH SPARROW seen by Jim McKenna and family was a count first ( a little bit of a surprise for it to be a count first). The HERMIT THRUSH found by Tom Schulenberg was the count's first since 1950(!) and only the second time it's ever been reported. John Gustafson also had a well-described CHIPPING SPARROW ( first one in 7 years and only the third time ever reported). The Governaili's found the count's only NORTHERN HARRIER and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER --they make me so proud! Julie and I enjoyed a rather magical day with good birds throughout the day that also included (in addition to Sandhills) an ADULT RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (behind the house and the count's first since 1977; 4th time ever), NORTHERN SHRIKE (Cold Brook Rd), RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD in a flock with BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, 1 CAROLINA WREN (at feeder), 1 PINE SISKIN ( at feeders and first seen this fall), and several others like Robin, Rough- legged Hawk, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks, Raven and a nice diversity of "typical" waterfowl at south end of Skaneateles Lake. The owling crew turned up 5 Eastern-screech Owls, 2 Barred Owls, 1 Great-horned and 1 LONG- EARED OWL (usual spot on Salt Rd). Ken Rosenberg and Tim Lenz had a very birdy day with 37 species topped by a NORTHERN SHRIKE, BARRED OWL, CAROLINA WREN, NORTHERN FLICKER, Raven, Horned Larks and more. Jay and Perri McGowan turned up a very high number of GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS in addition to 4 COMMON RAVENS. Count highs will likely be set for Screech Owl, GC Kinglet (30+), Common Raven (9 reported so far) and Carolina Wren (at least 5 reported so far). The Lime Hollow crew turned up 6 SONG SPARROWS at one wetland area in Mclean. Many large flocks of TREE SPARROWS were seen by many! Good count week birds are BALD EAGLE (Houghton Hill Friday), SNOW GEESE (many flyovers on Wednesday), AMERICAN KESTREL (Groton area StoneHedge Golf course Friday), and DRAKE WOOD DUCK at Little York Crossing on Friday --unfortunately not there first light Saturday. Overall half-hardies ruled the day, many of which are much harder to find on this much colder count area than the warmer Ithaca count circle. A big thanks goes out to all that helped! cheers, Matt Young -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web.com - Microsoft® Exchange solutions from a leading provider - http://link.mail2web.com/Business/Exchange _______________________________________________ CNY-Naturalhistory mailing list [email protected] http://darkstar.cortland.edu/mailman/listinfo/cny-naturalhistory -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://link.mail2web.com/mail2web -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES Archives: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
