I haven't gotten out birding much lately, so this morning I grabbed some Gimme coffee from the new coffee shop "The Shop" at the bottom of E. Seneca and headed out for a short drive. Nothing exceptional to report, but still a nice day for a little car birding ;)

At Myer's there was an Eastern Phoebe foraging along shore near the entrance to the small parking area at the point, as well as a small flock of Cedar Waxwings. Two Eastern Bluebirds were perched on the kiosk with a resting flock of mostly Ring-billed Gulls in their usual spot (a few Herring Gulls were also in the group). Handfull of DC Cormorants, Mallards and a single Great Black-backed Gull were out on the water. Further up the inlet were 2 female (young?) Hooded Mergansers, a few more mallard, and a handfull of the expected land birds. Visibility on the lake was pretty good, but I didn't notice anything out there other than a couple of boats, and the usual gulls, mallards, and cormorants.

I took a detour over to Stevenson Rd. on the way back home with the hope of plowed fields and a chance for Am. Golden Plovers. Wishfull thinking! ;) Instead, there was still plenty of green in the fields, zero plovers of any kind, and one lone Great Blue Heron hunting in one fields. The compost piles held a few gulls (mostly Herring with about half as many Ring-billed), a few crows, the usual flock(s) of Pigeons, and a nice group of 60+ Turkey Vultures.

Two of the TuVus had a little sparring match over who was going to be on top of a particular pile, which involved a lot of jumping and kicking at one another - something I hadn't seen before in this species, and a nice little cosolation prize for the otherwise uneventfull trip ;)

Good birding,
-Paul H.
