It appears to be preventing Apache's bval library from adding its own 
ValidatorBean implementation:

https://github.com/apache/bval/blob/master/bval-jsr/src/main/java/org/apache/bval/cdi/BValExtension.java

The presence of two ValidatorBeans was causing an ambiguous dependency error; 
adding the variable was a work around. I didn't try adding an exclusion but it 
might be a better solution.

Let us know if you get it to work that way.
