For some reason, my replies from my work email don't seem to be going
through to here (though Google has accepted the messages). I'll add my
reply here which will hopefully go through:

We were using cas.version 5.0.0, and gradle.version 3.1 as set in the
gradle properties. I tried updating to 5.0.2 and gradle.version 3.2.1 as
per the info in the gradle overlay template on github
<https://github.com/apereo/cas-gradle-overlay-template/blob/master/gradle.properties>,

but the same issue occurs.

Will look at the other suggestion from Misagh & Dimitry in a moment
