This looks excellent, we just have one issue: the master branch (target branch of this MP) is not what we're actually using in production at the moment. At the moment we're using the debian/5.20 branch, and there's work being done to move past that, possibly to the latest upstream autopkgtest version. This means this patchset needs some rebasing.
Also, it would be better to have the pretty comprehensive upstream CI run on this before merging. So my suggestion here is: could you rebase your deb822 branch against upstream master [1] and open an MP for upstream inclusion? We can then cherry-pick from that branch (even pre-merge) if we want to quickly get these changes in the Ubuntu autopkgtest infra.
